COOKING LIFE ON A TEFLON PAN

Sometimes, I just want to end it all. I must admit, I really thought the worst is over but I feel I never got out of the storm. My career is in shambles and I'm now lost. Retrenchment sucks! I've been through tons of interviews and puro final interviews. Pahirapan pang mag-follow up. Napapagod na ako. I'm emotionally drained. I'm tired. Ayaw ko na. Someone get me out of this nightmare.

To the company I've served for 4 fucking years, pay your dues to me! You've ruined my life when I've served you well. Pasalamat kayo hindi ko na kayo kinasuhan. Bayaran niyo na ako! Dammit!

May nalaman akong mabahong balita.

Oo, si Cristine Reyes ang number 1 sa FHM's 100 Sexiest Women of the Year.

Sabi nga there are 5 stages one must go through when someone or something is dying- the first is denial, second is emotional frustration, third is bargaining, fourth is acceptance, and last is letting go.

Tonight, ABS-CBN aired The Last Journey of Ninoy. It documents the final days of Ninoy and suffering and sacrifice he had to go through for the Filipino people. ABS-CBN also had to air it a day before the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant.

I have never seen such a powerful and yet simple documentary. I have to be honest that it has awaken my passion for this country and only now do I understand the responsibility of being a Filipino.

Being a Filipino goes beyond to those who would want to physically invade our country with tanks, bomber jets, and huey helicopters, and guns. Being a Filipino means defending and guarding our country from those who dare question the indomitable spirit of being a Filipino. These include those in high political positions and those who take advantage and abuse their power and belittle the simple Juan because they assume he will not fight back because he is weak and does not have the political and material machinery to win.

If there is one thing that I have learned tonight is that the Journey does not end with Ninoy or Cory. The journey continues with every Filipino man, woman, and child; to protect the flame that guides us and make sure it stays bright. We should not wait for another Ninoy or Cory or declare another hero or saint to remind us why we are free and why we should be proud to be Pinoys. We have a bigger role to play now. The ball is now in our hands.

Kaya mo bang maglakbay para sa bayan? Hanggang saan ka maglalakbay para sa Pinoy?

Batu-bato sa langit, ang tamaan sana tamaan!

In the Philippines, President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo announced that U.S. President Obama has stopped ignoring her calls and will now go for an Official Visit and also announced that a "large" number of people will be part of her entourage. It was later revealed that more than 100 delegates has joined this US visit for a possible meet-and-greet with Obama, which of course in Pinoy terminologies would mean picture-taking (kodakan) and autograph signing. Critics and media questioned why there is a need for a big entourage still decided to fly to the US and finally met President Obama on July 30.

August 1, 2009, the Philippines grieved the loss of Former President Corazon Aquino. President Cory is an icon of Philippine Democracy.

August 2, 2009, Kris Aquino gave a detailed account on the final weeks of President Cory on The Buzz. She also expressed disappointment and frustration with President GMA and her government upon their receipt of security pull-out order while President Cory was still alive.

August 4, 2009, the Filipino nation was moved to tears during the Pres. Aquino necrological services. It painted us a better picture how a simple lady never got intoxicated with power.

August 5, 2009, President Arroyo cuts short her US trip and visits the Aquino family to offer her condolences. On the same day, President Aquino was finally laid to rest.

August 8, 2009 (Manila Time), a New York Post article by Richard Johnson revealed how President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo and her entourage tried to re-create the Sex and the City lifestyle while on Official Visit in the US by ordering food and wine at Le Cirque which eventually totaled to US$20,000. This was also time when the nation was mourning the loss of a democratic icon.

Here are my thoughts:
1. Why didn't Arroyo cut her trip shorter? She could have come earlier than Wednesday, right?

2. Who's money did she use to foot the US$20,000 bill? The Pinoy taxpayers paid for her airfare, is she expecting that we foot this bill as well?

3. Can someone please tell her that she is not Sarah Jessica Parker? She's too short to play the role of Carrie Bradshaw.

4. These people will never get my vote along with Jamby Madrigal this coming 2010 elections--- Eduardo Ermita, Heherson Alvarez and Alberto Romulo Arthur Yap, Gilberto Teodoro, Cerge Remonde, Bayani & Marides Fernando; Senators Lito Lapid, Miriam Defensor-Santiago; Speaker Prospero Nograles; Reps. Rodante Marcoleta, Daryl Grace Abayon, Catalina Leonen Pizarro, Godofredo & Remedios Arquiza, Agapito & Socorro Guanlao; , Gov. Tet Garcia of Bataan and City Mayors Nitoy Durano of Danao in Cebu and Fernando of Mariki; FILUSA’s Jacqueline Lingad Ricci, etc.

5. I want to see and hear what crazy excuse Malacanang will come up with after this scandal.

6. Are Pinoys even concerned that this happened? Are we up to challenge to uphold that Cory experience we all felt this week or are we just going to let this go?

7. Let me share some of Arroyo's statements during her "supposedly" last SONA this 2009:

I am accused of misgovernance. Many of those who accuse me of it left me the problem of their misgovernance to solve. And we did it.

I am falsely accused, without proof, of using my office for personal profit. Many of those who accuse me of it have lifestyles and spending habits that make them walking proofs of that crime.

We can read their frustrations. They had the chance to serve this good country and they blew it by serving themselves.

Those who live in glass houses should cast no stones. Those who should be in jail should not threaten it, especially if they have been there.

8. GMA also clearly made the statements below in the last SONA. Our taxes are supposedly invested for our country's well-being and not for her welfare nor for her cronies but the New York Post article seemed to prove otherwise:

Towards that vision, we made key reforms. Our economic plan centers on putting people first. New tax revenues were put in place to help pay for better healthcare, more roads, a strong education system. Housing policies were designed to lift up our poorest citizens so they can live and raise a family with dignity. Ang ating mga puhunan sa agrikultura ay naglalayong kilalanin ang ating mga magsasaka bilang backbone ng ating bansa, at bigyan sila ng mga modernong kagamitan to feed our nation and feed their own family.

The article is distressing, frustrating, and infuriating. What should we do now as a Filipino nation? Cory makes the front cover of Time Magazine as Woman of the Year, Gloria makes the New York Post Page Six with a scandal. A tale of two Presidents, two different lives. One lives in simplicity and service of the nation, one lives in an attempt to have glamorous and Sex and in the City lifestyle and fails to get the trust of her people. Do we hear another, "I Am Sorry?"

President Cory, several weeks ago I wrote a very long blog. It was about how you touched my life and how you made me proud to be a Filipino. Today, my mom (again) broke the news as I woke up from bed that you had accepted to join the Lord's government in heaven. Probably the Lord needs you to start a different kind of moral revolution in heaven just like you did in 1986.

Thank you for dedicating your life in restoring democracy in this country. Had you not accepted the challenge, I am sure this country would have been in a bigger mess. It's only sad to think there are only a few people in the government who follow your example. This country needs more people like you.

Where ever you may be, I pray that you continue to watch this country and help us move this country forward to a better tomorrow.

Prayer for a Happy Death (by Corazon Aquino)

Almighty God, most merciful Father
You alone know the time
You alone know the hour
You alone know the moment
When I shall breathe my last.

So, remind me each day,
most loving Father
To be the best that I can be.
To be humble, to be kind,
To be patient, to be true.
To embrace what is good,
To reject what is evil,
To adore only You.

When the final moment does come
Let not my loved ones grieve for long.
Let them comfort each other
And let them know
how much happiness
They brought into my life.
Let them pray for me,
As I will continue to pray for them,
Hoping that they will always pray
for each other.

Let them know that they made possible
Whatever good I offered to our world.
And let them realize that our separation
Is just for a short while
As we prepare for our reunion in eternity.

Our Father in heaven,
You alone are my hope.
You alone are my salvation.
Thank you for your unconditional love, Amen.

Today, I cried hard for someone who isn't close to me. I cried when your daughter Kris cried on national television and said that you will be in the hospital indefinitely because of your sensitive condition. I know it sounds crazy to cry for someone whom I was not a family or a friend but Cory made me proud to be a Filipino. I felt we were losing an icon more than an idol and that's why I cried.

Mrs. Aquino, I was only three years old when your husband Ninoy was assassinated at the tarmac of the old International Airport in August of 1983. I was too young to understand what happened but I remember my mom crying as she watched the news on our old black National television set. We even kept a Betamax tape of NHK Japan as they analyze how your husband was murdered.

Sometime in 1985, I recall the song Tie A Yellow Ribbon being played over and over and the entire country literally became yellow because of the ribbons tied not on oak trees but on every home, on every tree, on every vehicle, and on every arm of the Filipino people. This probably was the first encounter of every Filipino of the Cory Magic. The people believed that things can change for the better.

In 1986, EDSA Revolution happened. I was only five years old but I remember marching along EDSA with my mom and my aunt. She carried me on her shoulders and asked me to give flowers to soldiers on tanks. I was still too young to understand what was happening but I knew in my heart this was very important. In the same year, you became President of the Philippines and became a mother to millions of Filipinos. You made us realize that Filipinos are strong if we only unite and stand together as one. It took me several years before I understood the importance of democracy and why we need to fight for truth and justice.

You showed us the value of faith and why it was important to have a personal relationship with God. Probably this was the reason why none of the Coup attempts were successful and why your detractors failed every time they would try to create an issue against you and your family.

Mrs. Aquino, you were there to be guiding light of every Filipino whenever there was a political crisis. You were there to remind each and every one of us that we need to protect our democracy, we need to support the innocent, and protect our government from the corrupt. You taught us that power is nothing without the support of people. You made us realize that it is faith, courage, love, will, and determination that makes the person and not the position.

You once said that you are not embarrassed to say that you believe in miracles. I pray that God will do a miracle.

I'm guilty. I have the video files of the infamous Hayden Kho/ Katrina Halili/ Maricar Reyes/ Brazilian Model Scandal. I have seen it and I'm sure that over a few thousand Pinoys have probably seen it as well. Just to clarify, this blog is not to lecture whether we should tolerate or stop patronizing the said video. Here are just some random thoughts about this whole brouhaha:

1. Nakakaawa yung girls. I felt so sorry for them. One, I'm sorry because the videos were released without their knowledge. Two, ang liit pala ni... Uhmm...and he is so not a performer. Okay, 'nuff said.

2. It is better to have sex with all the lights off.

3. Careless Whisper is so passe. C'mon, the Wham song has been used in every ST/ TF/ pito-pito movies. Some overused songs include My All, Ocean Deep, Like A Virgin, and Arayyyy. Try to use other songs like Who Let The Dogs Out or Farewell to You My Friend. Try niyo kaya mag-live band para ma-iba.

4. I don't know if Glow Balls are such a big turn on before sex. Can anyone beside Hayden confirm this?

5. Chocolates is really a good aphrodisiac as suggested by the video. Ano kayang brand yung kinakain nila? Have they tried ice cream or whipped cream?

6. Never tell your friends that you have a sex video. If you have told or shared your scandalous video with a friend make sure that you stay good with your friend forever!

7. I have gathered that there are 40 videos in the Hayden scandal and one of those videos include a Hayden and Vicki Belo moment. Before you download isipin mo muna...gusto mo ba talaga makita and sex video Vicki Belo?

8. I don't know which is worse Madam Auring claiming na may asim pa siya or Vicki Belo claiming that she has a sex video?

9. Fake and pwet ni Hayden. Only Belo touches his butt. Who touches yours?

Feel free to add some thoughts or comments. I'm sure mayroon ka.

Today, I had a blast. I finally met The Company face-to-face. Luck has been on my side since Friday. Yesterday, I won a Christmas ham. Today, I met my favorite group.

I never really expected that The Company will be at SM Megamall. I just had a tiring day at the job fair, when my trusted companion and I decided to stroll since we had to wait until 9pm to egress our things.

I was able to check a lot of items on
sale but I never bought any. It wasn't a good time to buy since I didn't have money. Hah! My companion and I decided to take a trip down at The Atrium when we saw this big tarp with The Company's name on it. This is where I started to freak out. Anyways, we decided to watch and wait for the show since there were still a lot of empty chairs. The group went on stage around 8:30pm.

The show started with Magical Mystery Tour from The Beatles. I was really expecting that this will be their opening number since I already had a copy of their new album prior to today. Since there will be a meet a greet after the show, I decided to buy my second Group Hug album just for their autograph (it also came with a poster, sayang din yun). I was singing along with the group with every song that they sang and I didn't know they noticed until I had the album and poster signed.  I am ecstatic that they made a medley of their songs and sang it during the show (sayang wala yung Minsan Pa). I was also glad they sang Bulaklak from their album Mahal Kong Radyo.

I will never forget this day especially their fabulous rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. It's also my favorite track on their new album (I also liked Boogie Wonderland but they didn't perform it. Dang!). Anyways, I thank God for giving me a great day and for giving me a chance to hear The Company live. At the same time, I just hope I didn't freak them out for being "makulit" as a fan.

The album The Company: Group Hug is now available in all record bars. Also, don't forget to buy Kumpas by FILharmoniKA which is another great album.

It's a great start I guess for 2009. The year opened with an invitation to rehearse for an upcoming concert at DLSZ. It has been ten years since I performed in a group and it is great to be back.

I have uploading a lot of choir/chorale performances and I can truly say that I miss singing on stage. I miss the excitement, the tension, and the energy. I miss the vocalization, the memorizing of songs, etc.

I have also been invited by another group to jam with them a couple of days before the new year. I hope I can find a way to work out my schedule.

Now, if I can only wake up my dormant vocal chords.

"Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” - Walt Disney

2008 was a transition year. It was a year where a lot of people I know took their final bow and said goodbye.

I lost my cousin to drugs.
My aunt had her final battle with cancer.
A friend in Canada was brutally shot.
A co-worker and friend passed away due to an accident 2 days before new year.

At the same time, I know I need to move on. I need to move forward. I don't know what is in store in 2009, but I know I have to take a big leap and put my trust in God. There is nothing constant in this world except death, taxes, and change. Pray for me in 2009!

I am quarantined for the meantime. Well, at least I get a week off from work but this is not what I had in mind. I was planning to save my vacation leaves and sick leaves for next year because I had plans of going to Boracay and hopefully travel to another city in Asia. I do not think that is feasible as of this week.

Since I am stuck at home, I had chance to finally watch my mount load of DVDs. Yesterday, I was able to finish the entire season 2 of Ugly Betty and sad to say I didn't find it as exciting and as comedic as the first season. Although, I had so much fun watching the wedding scene of Wilhelmina and Bradford especially when that dumb front desk girl started to sing Milkshake (by Kelis) complete with dance steps.

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,
And their like
It's better than yours,
Damn right it's better than yours,
I can teach you,
But I have to charge

I'm going to check Limewire later for this song.

Today, I plan to watch more DVDs and probably read a book. I just bought Caregiver by Sharon Cuneta and  So You Think You Can Dance.

I am currently at MRT Shaw while I am doing this blog.

Last Saturday, we had the opportunity to talk with public school teachers and discuss how our company can help improve English in their schools. It was a very thought provoking conversation and I came to realize a lot of things after the event.

Today, I saw a couple of beggars and a basureros here at MRT Shaw and I thought that these kids ought to be in school. They should be learning in a cramped classroom, sharing books, and listening to long lectures. Then again, these kids seemed to have mastered the art of asking for your drink without batting an eyelash. They seem to be the bullies you hated in school, but you can't do anything. It's either they pose the "awa" face angle or they turn the "kulit" factor on you. Yikes! I don't know if they have parents or they decided to explore the world on their own.

It's a sad, sad scene and yet one can only feel hopeless. I just feel that nowadays a lot of us just accept what's happening in our community and probably because this has been a long playing story or probably by just seeing them we already feel that we are way lucky than they. Tsk!

On October 23, 2008, I never expected that I will be a victim of hit and run.

I just came from an out of town job fair and a photo shoot in the office for a campaign. At around 7:00 p.m., I decided to go to National Bookstore Buendia to buy a street map of Rizal in preparation of a job fair the following day. By 7:30 p.m., I was ready to go home and I decided take a jeepney to LRT Buendia and get on a bus to SM Southmall. As I was waiting for a ride, a jeepney suddenly did a reverse and hit me. The impact was so hard and I found myself lying on the concrete pavement of Buendia.  I heard people saying that someone was hit and I remember that I was trying to identify the jeepney that hit me. I was so disoriented that I did not get the plate number of the vehicle.

There were a lot of people on the scene, but I remember only one person who assisted me to stand up and get my personal items. Other people just stared and when they realized that I seemed alright they decided to just attend to other things. The jeepney driver never helped and decided to run away and managed to get a few passengers.

After the incident, I decided to take a shuttle going home and I felt that I was okay. I decided to call a friend and told him what had happened. He was worried, but I said I was fine and I was on my way home. After an hour, I realized that something was wrong. I couldn't get off the shuttle. My right leg was painful and my face felt numb. I tried to endure the pain and immediately took a trike home.

When I arrived home, my mom noticed that I had difficulty walking and I told her that I was hit by a jeepney. She immediately said that we should go to the hospital.

After a few x-rays, the doctor said that my bones were fine but I would need to apply cold compress and take pain relievers for my leg muscles because of trauma. Now, I could barely lift my right leg and wearing an underwear and pants has become a chore.

Lately, I have been hearing in the news that there are vicitms of hit and run and victims night crimes where people refuse to help the injured or the victims of unfortunate incident. They would either pass by or just become a plain uzi (uzisero). There are also drivers who do not deserve a license but still find a way to get one.

I can go on forever and rant about the lack of moral judgement in the society, at the same time it's sad to know the direction our society has taken. I hope this realization is only for now.

Only for now!
(For now there's life!)
Only for now!
(For now there's love!)
Only for now!
(For now there's work!)
For now there's happiness!
But only for now!
(For now discomfort!)
Only for now!
(For now there's friendship!)
Only for now (For now!)
Only for now!

Only for now! (Sex!)
Is only for now! (Your hair!)
Is only for now! (George Bush!)
Is only for now!

Don't stress,
Relax,
Let life roll off your backs
Except for death and paying taxes,
Everything in life is only for now!

NICKY:
Each time you smile...

ALL:
...Only for now

KATE MONSTER:
It'll only last a while.

ALL:
...Only for now

PRINCETON:
Life may be scary...

ALL:
...Only for now
But it's only temporary

Ba-dum ba-dum
Ba-dum ba-dum
Ba dum ba-dum
Ba-da da da da
ba-da da-da da da-da
Ba-dum ba-da, ba-dum ba-da
ohhhh-

PRINCETON:
Everything in life is only for now.

Just last week, I was introduced to the musical Avenue Q. Well, our company's annual Christmas party is fast approaching and we need to start planning for the big event. This year, we plan to go broadway for the group competition. We listed a couple of popular Broadway musicals and Avenue Q was suggested by a member of the committee.

Eventually, the play was given an X because of the theme or the storyline of the musical. Because of that premise, I immediately downloaded the songs from the internet and I figured out that the internet is not only for porn.

I listened to the entire soundtrack and absolutely enjoyed it. Atlantis Production staged this last year and missed it. I hope after Cinderella, they restage this musical.

Rent is evicted from Broadway. After
5,019 performances and after a long period of protests for free board and lodging, their contract ends on September 7, 2008.

I never had a chance to watch Rent on Broadway, at the same time I was fortunate enough to watch Atlantis' production of Rent at Music Museum in Manila. Rent was introduced to me by a friend in high school and the soundtrack made me crave to see the actual production. I have sung through the entire soundtrack and memorized most of its songs especially their biggest hit Seasons of Love.

I hope they tour Manila sometime soon or I hope a good samaritan gives me free round trip tickets to Broadway and tickets to the finale. Viva La Vie Boheme!

Last Friday, I managed to attend the 22nd Anniversary Party of the Philippine Star and I was able to go home sober after the party. I must admit I had a pretty long day considering it was the last day of the working week and thus the party was a welcome reprieve.

I will always be thankful for the Philippine Star for making my dream come true. The Star published the two articles I submitted sometime in 2000 and 2001.  I was floored and my hands trembled each time I saw and read my article in Young Star (YS). I never expected that they would actually approve and publish the articles I sent through email.

To the Philippine Star, thank you very much. Though your party may have meant for your advertisers, the party felt it was a homecoming for me. Happy 22nd Anniversary and I hope I can write again for you.

Makulay (makulay)
Ang buhay (ang buhay)
Makulay ang buhay
Sa sinabawang gulay

Sinabawang gulay, sarap talaga
Ang bawat higop ay puno ng saya
Sinabawang gulay, sarap namnamin
Lumalakas ako, lahat ay kayang gawin

Makulay (makulay)
Ang buhay (ang buhay)
Makulay ang buhay
Sa sinabawang gulay

(Shift half-note higher)
Sabaw pa lamang ay healthy na
Lagyan ng knorr at gulay, kami'y tuwang tuwa
Gumagaling ng todo sa aral at laro
Kaya't tara na maki-higop na kayo

Makulay (makulay)
Ang buhay (ang buhay)
Makulay ang buhay
Sa sinabawang gulay

Makulay (makulay)
Ang buhay (ang buhay)
Makulay ang buhay
Sa sinabawang gulay
